Marilyn Monroe had an astonishing 430 books in her personal library. Most of them have been auctioned and long sold to collectors.
She was often photographed reading, which could have been part of the impression she wanted people to have of her.
The website OpenCulture once compiled the entire list of Monroe’s books— which included numerous Greek titles.
Did she read them? We will never know, but an interesting piece of trivia nonetheless.
Marilyn’s Greek books:
The Saviours Of God: Spiritual Exercises by Nikos Kazantzakis
The Last Temptation Of Christ by Nikos Kazantzakis
2 Plays: Peace And Lysistrata by Aristophanes
The Philosophy Of Plato
Greek Mythology by Edith Hamilton
Theory Of Poetry And Fine Art by Aristotle
Metaphysics by Aristotle
Plutarch’s Lives by William and John Langhorne

This is the second post I’ve come across in two days suggesting Marilyn Monroe might have been faking her interest in books. The woman surrounded herself with good books, and frequently had one at hand while traveling, waiting on set, et cetera. Comments from those who knew her and a quick scan of letters she wrote limn the portrait of an erudite young woman with a wide range of interests, capable of conversing intelligently about a number of issues. Why question whether she was a reader?
The inference I am sensing is that a beautiful woman, a star of her magnitude, is unlikely to be an avid reader, a student of the world, an intellectual being. Am I misunderstanding you?
