Greece’s capital is known worldwide for its ancient history — history which attracts millions of tourists every year.
While its ancient past appeals to many, Athens’ more recent history often receives less attention.
The 1920s in particular marked a significant period in the city’s development. The decade saw an influx of modern architectural influences such as Bauhaus and Art Deco (from Germany and France, respectively).
Such architectural influences remain prominent in Athenian neighborhoods including Kolonaki, Kypseli and Exarcheia, among others.
In addition to architecture, Athens experienced major demographic changes during the 1920s. Hundreds of thousands of Greek refugees fleeing Turkish oppression in Asia Minor arrived and brought their own cultural influences to the city.
