Greece main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the center-right New Democracy party has come out in strong opposition to the deal struck between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Mitsotakis, in a speech he delivered via his YouTube and Facebook channel, called the deal a “bad” one and said Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras showed disdain towards the Greek people and their concerns.
Tsipras announced today that he has come to an agreement with his counterpart in Skopje, Zoran Zaev, on the name “North Macedonia.”
Mitsotakis also stated that Tsipras’ government was involved in secret negotiations for six months and ignored the opposition parties, despite the “Macedonia” name negotiations being such an important national matter.
He said that Tsipras, who “doesn’t even have the support of his own party,” and lacks the “political legitimacy” to sign such a deal on behalf of the people of Greece.
