A Houston bakery is offering free loaves of bread to furloughed federal government workers in the city as the partial government shut down leaves hundreds of thousands without paychecks.
Tasos Katsaounis, proprietor of the Bread Man Baking Company announced the generous offer on the bakery’s Instagram account.
“I heard on the news this morning that government employees affected by the government shutdown are forced to bake bread at home. I find this unacceptable and I want to do what I can to help those in need,” Tasos said on his post.
“To put it simply, I want to help where I can and how I can. It’s not a lot, but it’s something and that’s better than nothing,” Katsaounis said.
“It’s who we are as Greeks,” Tasos told The Pappas Post in an email. “We learn philotimo and philanthropy as young people at home and it becomes a part of who we are as people and as business owners.”
Katsaounis quit a lucrative job as a consultant to begin baking bread out of his kitchen with recipes passed down from his grandmother to his mother.
Bread Man Baking Company is now one of the city’s most popular bakeries which serves thousands of loaves of artisanal bread every day– including some special varieties that include Kalamata olives, olive oil– even feta cheese.
