This year the Greek America Foundation is collaborating with the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago to launch its first-ever Summer Service Learning initiative and engage North American college students with volunteer programs in Greece.
Participants from universities in the United States or Canada will spend three weeks in Athens volunteering for The HOME Project, a non-profit organization that addresses the needs of unaccompanied refugee and migrant children.
Volunteers will support an established network of shelters and participate in recreational activities such as sports and social gatherings, help children acquire necessary skills through educational tutoring, and pursue creative outlets such as music and the visual arts.
The Greek America Foundation is a New York state-based non-profit organization founded to promote, preserve and perpetuate Greek culture, history and heritage in North America.
In addition to its popular Semester in Athens scholarship program, which sends American and Canadian college students to study for a semester at the American College of Greece, the foundation has supporter dozens of students through scholarships, internships and other academic programs.
Travel and accommodation expenses are covered for students who are accepted into the program.
