In an effort to alleviate challenges faced by children in Greece, the New-York based Greek America Foundation has launched a two-year campaign that seeks to raise funds and awareness for charities in Greece whose work impacts children.
The #ChildrenOfGreece campaign will run from 2019-2021 and will support six charities — ELIZA, The Home Project, HOPE Genesis, Ark of the World, METAdrasi and SOS Children’s Villages.
The campaign encourages participants to make a donation, donate their birthday or become an Ambassador of Hope — a supporter who donates or raises at least $1,000 by hosting their own special event for the cause.
With the support of donors in the United States and Canada, the Greek America Foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities and individuals in Greece since 2013.
These funds have supported projects that include rebuilding fishermen’s boats, providing food for the needy and helping thousands of disenfranchised people.
Following a devastating earthquake on the island of Lesvos in June 2017, Project Hope for Greece provided school supplies and book bags for 37 children and supported 40 families with monthly food stipends between $80-$120.
Project Hope also facilitated a six-month program providing more than $10,000 for “Mama Maria” Makrogianni — a woman on Samos who has cooked thousands of meals for refugees since opening her taverna to those in need in 2015.
Today, four children in Greece face extreme poverty, making the country the worst place for children in the European Union, according to Eurostat.
Child homelessness also continues to plague the country, as an estimated 2,000 child refugees remain stranded without homes, according to SOS Children’s Villages.
Statistics such as these prompted the foundation to select children as its campaign’s beneficiaries.
The campaign encourages supporters to donate their birthdays and the Greek America Foundation has set up a step-by-step guide outlining the process.
The organization also created a similar guide for supporters interested in becoming Ambassadors of Hope by donating or raising at least $1,000.
