The Aristotle Onassis-Marilyn Monroe connection involves a bizarre scheme by the wily Greek shipping magnate that — had it succeeded — would have made the American blond bombshell Her Serene Royal Highness Princess Marilyn of Monaco.
In the 1950s Onassis had invested heavily in Monaco, as he wanted to give the tiny nation a facelift and add a bit of glitz and glam to attract international attention.
He thought that Monroe, the number one Hollywood actress at the time, was best-suited to bring such glamour and increase the value of his millions of dollars in real estate and business holdings.
With Prince Ranier ready for marriage, Onassis approached Monroe through intermediaries.
Onassis overlooked the fact that Monroe was already divorced twice — a no-no for European royalty at the time.
Monroe found the idea appealing but did not take it seriously, admitting that she had never heard of Monaco and did not know where it was on a map.
She also called her would-be husband “Prince Reindeer” when asked about the plan.
Because Monroe was involved with playwright Arthur Miller at the time, Prince Ranier ultimately married Grace Kelly — another Hollywood star.
This too, was Onassis’ idea, according to movie producer Robert Evans’ blockbuster book ‘The Fat Lady Sang.’
