Seven years since the financial crisis shook Greece, many young people lack opportunity or hope for the future.
Austerity and financial insecurity have pushed the birthrate to all-time lows, and members of the younger generations are leaving Greece for better opportunities elsewhere, leaving experts worried about Greece’s very existence.
PBS News Hour special correspondent Malcolm Brabant reports on what has been called a “demographic time bomb” from Greece.

It is really sad to see that young people really don’t have a future here in Greece. I was born and raised in the USA and I have been living in Athens for the past 7 years. The Greek government doesn’t make Greek citizens a priority. How can a country with billions of dollars of debt and austerity measures is able to help millions of “refugees”. The Greek government has offered free housing to the refugees, free electricity, water, etc. Are they concerned about the fact that in 20-30 years or less Greeks will become a minority in their own country? Nope! So you think they are going to care that young people can’t find jobs or are getting paid 600 euros a month? But at the same time “refugee’ get everything for free. I believe that these people should recieve help, but they should see it from a country that is not already suffering. So while everyone living outside of Greece, has this special weakness for this country as I do myself…. You would be seriously disturbed and sadden to see how things really are run here in Greece. Also, something else that might seem like a shock is that Greeks living here especially the young generation, do not love their country. They are not proud of this country. And why is that? The education system is corrupt. The disaster of modern day Greece is terrible. The Greek citizens are not to blame, it’s the government of Greece. Unfortunately, I believe it will take many years for anything to be better in this country.
