The Island of Hydra’s Unique Good Friday Tradition in Photos


The parish of St. John in the village of Kamini on the island of Hydra continued a tradition that both honors its Greek Orthodox faith and its maritime heritage this year.

The unique tradition, which involves the funeral procession of the bier of Jesus Christ which carries the Epitaphios, leads from the church into the sea. The custom has been happening for more than a century.
