For the 12th consecutive year, the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival is preparing to roll out the red carpet.
After receiving a record 175 film submissions, judges have revealed this year’s selections for another program that Artistic & Festival Director Aristotle Katopodis says will showcase Greece’s top work.
“Greek Cinema continues to impress and produce,” Katopodis says. “Greek filmmakers keep winning major awards at international film festivals and we are proud to host over 50 of the best and most innovative Greek films from around the world, for the 12th time.”
The theme of this year’s Orpheus Awards Ceremony is “The Academy of Greeks,” paying tribute to Greek artists who have received an Academy Award or Oscar Nomination since 1935.
George Chakiris, the winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in “West Side Story,” George Chakiris, will be one of the honorees with actress Rita Moreno presenting his award.
Another main festival theme will be “Filming in Greece,” as Katopodis says that the Hellenic Republic is “vigorously entering” the list of places worldwide with good incentives for international film production.
The festival will run June 4-10 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and will include 11 feature films, 15 documentaries, 27 shorts, as well as industry-lead roundtables, panels and masterclasses.
Among the main screenings are the West Coast premieres of “1968,” a historical drama directed by Tassos Boulmetis, and the comedies “Smuggling Hendrix” by Marios Piperides and “Perfect Strangers” by Thodoris Atheridis.
The festival celebrates the best new films from Greek filmmakers worldwide and promotes Greek cinema and cultural exchange while bridging the gap between the filmmakers and Hollywood.
