Aegean Airlines has made the largest investment by a private Greek company in more than a decade, choosing Airbus over Boeing, for an order of 42 new airplanes for its growing network.
The order– valued at $5 billion, will renew the Greek airline’s fleet and will add capacity for future international expansion, according to a statement from company executives during a press conference.
Aegean had also been considering Boeing 737s but opted for the European made airplanes.
Aegean signed deal with Airbus that included a firm order of 30 aircraft from the A320neo family, with an option of 12 additional jets with new generation engines offering fuel savings of 15 percent.
The delivery of the aircraft is expected to take place between 2020 and 2025, Aegean said.
Focusing on its people power, Aegean has consistently experienced growth, even during Greece’s financial crisis. In 2017, almost 13 million people flew Aegean flights, which also include the domestic network operated by Aegean-owned Olympic Airlines.
