The famed Greek Presidential Guard— the Evzones— are in Sydney, Australia, taking part in commemorations for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete. Australia is closely tied to the battle as Australian and Greek forces fought side by side on the island against the Nazis before the island ultimately fell.
A photo appeared on my Twitter newsfeed that I just couldn’t help but share.
To describe it— or rather, to attempt to describe it, wouldn’t do the photo justice, so I leave it to you.
The photographer who posted the image is George Vardas, who— according to his Twitter bio is the Vice President of Australians for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures and Secretary of the Australian Hellenic Council.
He also describes himself as a cultural heritage enthusiast and a writer/photographer.
This has to be one of the most amazing photos I’ve seen– included with others from Mr. Vardas’ Twitter page. Thanks George for the shots. Follow George Vardas on Twitter here.
