The massive 6.1 earthquake that shook the Ionian Greek island of Lefkada and caused considerable damage and two deaths also drastically altered the island’s entire location on the earth.
According to the Athens Geodynamics Institute data collected by the GPS station at Ponti on Lefkada, the island shifted 36 centimeters, or more than 14 inches southward from its original position.
The island was declared in a state of emergency for six months. Dozens of houses and 13 public buildings were deemed uninhabitable or unsafe while hundreds of houses and buildings need repairs.
The earthquake also caused considerable damage to the natural layout of the island, including wiping out the well-known sandy beach of Egremni.
