A team of six musicians from Berklee College of Music in Boston want to share their talent and use music to change the lives of hundreds of kids currently in the care of Kivotos Tou Kosmou, an institution that cares for homeless mothers and children.
The project is called Kalesma, or “Invitation” and the mission is to create a long-term music education program for the children of Kivotos. A quarter of their $25,000 goal has already been raised through a fundraising page.
The first step of this project is to bring six musicians from Berklee to Greece for the sole purpose of working and performing together on stage with a choir of 40 children of ‘Kivotos’.
The children will be trained for a year prior to the concert by professional educator/musician Aggeliki Toubanaki. The artists will work with the children for one week in July 2018.
But the final performance is not the only goal of this project but the beginning of a permanent music education program which will start in September of 2018.
“This idea came to life when I visited Kivotos last Christmas with the intention of finding the musical talent that exists there. I witnessed how music cultivates kindness, respect and teamwork, and builds self esteem. I decided that I will do everything within my power to fulfill this need for music education.” Vasilis Kostas
All six artists who will work with the children, are graduates from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which trains its students to create humanitarian projects and to bring social change through music.
The team aims to raise $25,000 to fund the project. The link to donate is here.
