The International Organization for Migration has released startling numbers of refugee crossings for January 2016. “An estimated 52,055 migrants and refugees have arrived in the Greek islands since the beginning of the year,” the IOM said.
The IOM also reported that a survey of migrants and refugees arriving in Greece showed 90% were from Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan.
Increased traffic means increased deaths, as well. Almost 300 people have died in January alone, attempting to make the crossing. Numerous accidents off Greek islands of Kalolimnos, Kalymnos, Samos and Lesvos were reported throughout the month, as were several on Turkish beaches.
